WJArchitects President & CEO Jason Jensen was recently featured by Invest: Tampa Bay to discuss the evolving architecture shaping Tampa Bay and development landscape across the region.

In the interview, Jensen shared insights on resilient redevelopment, adaptive reuse, Tampa Bay’s urban identity, and the importance of creating thoughtful pedestrian experiences within the urban fabric as the region continues to grow. Tampa Bay has been the Firm’s home for more than three decades, and we continue to see opportunities across the region. With offices in Tampa and St. Petersburg, WJA remains focused on serving the communities where it has built lasting relationships.

Resilient Redevelopment

As waterfront and industrial areas continue to evolve, resilience is becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation. Jensen discussed opportunities to encourage redevelopment that addresses flooding and hurricane risks while creating lasting value for communities.

Adaptive Reuse

Changing property values and development patterns are also creating new opportunities for adaptive reuse. Jensen highlighted WJA’s work on the St. Pete Athletic Club, which transformed seven former warehouse buildings into a new destination featuring recreation and hospitality.

Projects like this demonstrate how existing spaces can be reimagined to support new uses while contributing to the continued evolution of their surrounding neighborhoods.

Creating Better Pedestrian Experiences

As Tampa Bay continues to grow, Jensen also emphasized the importance of preserving the character and texture of the region’s cities. Walkable streets, varied storefronts, landscaping, gathering spaces, and thoughtful design all contribute to a stronger pedestrian experience. These elements help create places where people want to spend time, connect, and return.

“Good design at the pedestrian level” is an important part of maintaining the character that makes Tampa Bay’s communities unique. We are proud to contribute to the continued growth of Tampa Bay through design that responds to the needs of its communities while creating opportunities for the future.
